Thunder Baseball is Rolling

The ODA Varsity baseball team is continuing their season with a bang. The team played three games two of which were district games. The Thunder worked hard in the off season, the rewards showing in these first few games.

Their success has not come without difficulties, however. Several players have struggled with injuries early on impacting the middle infield and pitching staff. Despite this setback, the team continues to surge.

“They don’t look like the most talented team but they get it done,” says sophomore Taber Chadwick.

Of particular note is senior Parke Phillips, the starting catcher/ captain and leadoff hitter. Phillips has been an amazing leader on the field and absolute beast at the plate. He has hit three home runs in the past two games. Two of which were grand slams and also two in one game.

“Parke is an incredible man, he’s doing the unthinkable, I cant imagine life without him on the baseball team. He’s a stud on and off the field,” says sophomore Max Monroe.

The team does not have an easy road to the district championship this year. The Florida High School Athletics Association (FHSAA) has added more teams into the district, teams with more experience and maybe talent.

“I think it’s [the district] very bloated. There are a lot of teams in it. I think the FHSAA tried their best to not care about the smaller schools and just bunch the smaller schools into one district and it doesn’t really prepare us for the districts or regional tournaments,” says junior Duncan Cappar.

This competition is not gonna stop the Thunder. In addition to their skill, the group’s camaraderie and confidence make them strong competitors.
