College Seminar Powerpoint Guides Juniors in College Search

The single most important mission of upperclassmen is to master the college application process.  Last week, Wednesday April 11th, the Junior class migrated to the Commons for the final college seminar, intended to help students further master this process.  After students handed in college essays to their respective counselor, Joe Runge lectured the Junior class on the importance of the process while also reassuring students’ college dreams with various statistics.  Amongst these statistics was the percentage of acceptances versus denials for the class of 2012: 95%, a figure quieting any remaining anxieties Juniors may still have had.  Complemented by casually chowing down on Monty’s infamous flatbread pizza, Runge’s friendly lecture made for a somewhat casual environment.  However, students would soon be kicked back into reality following the relocation of the meeting to a room where casualness and pizza are not welcome: the library.

Under a dark Florida sky, the formally attired Michael Salmon presented an intimidating eighteen slide powerpoint complete with deadlines, responsibilities, and expectations for the course of the applications process.  Salmon then referred Juniors to a website known as Naviance.  Naviance is an online tool that first takes into account students’ GPA’s and SAT scores.  Naviance then displays a chart informing one exactly where they fit in, relative to past acceptances within our alumni.  The program thus quite bluntly informs students of their chances of an acceptance to a certain college, snapping them from any hopeful illusion they may have had for the future of their education
