March to the Cure

What is Relay for Life? What purpose does it serve? How can you help Relay for Life at ODA?
Relay for life is part of the American Cancer society which helps raise money around the world working with schools. Relay for Life was started in the 1980s by a doctor named Gordy Klatt. Dr. Klatt started this organization by personally raising money by running marathons. This was the start of a nation-wide fund raising for the victims of cancer.
For ODA, this will be the fifth year participating in Relay for Life. Last year the Out-of-Door Academy raised about $75,000 and was ranked fourth in the nation for fundraising.
In March, the 2014 Relay for Life will take place on the football field. This year’s theme is March Madness. For people who do not know what that is, it is a nation-wide college basketball tournament which excites the nation with huge underdog upsets and crazy fans.
Senior, Kevin Grathwohl said, “I enjoy Relay each year its always a fun and enjoyable time to hang out with friends and know that it’s for a good cause.”
So what can you do to help this year’s epic fundraising journey? Options are starting a team, being the captain, and raising money to help benefit organization. You may also simply consider joining a team and to help raise money. Not everyone has to be on a team to attend the event. Lots of people just show up and walk. Showing your support for the cause in any of several ways is what counts.
This March 21, come out to ODA and participate in one of the greatest most inspiring fundraising events for cancer. We’re all in this together!
