Thanksgiving isn’t Only for Binging on Food

This fall is a new season of TV shows. The top two mind provoking shows about how technology can change our society is Westworld and Black Mirror. Technology is rapidly evolving in our current society, so fast that the ethics on how we use it is ambiguous. These two tv shows examine how this advanced technology can affect our society in both good and bad ways.
Westworld is an HBO special. It’s about this perfect vacation world in the wild west. It is an amusement park with androids and the human visitors can interact with different story lines in Westworld. The show gives you different perspectives of the visitors, the staff, the founder, and the androids themselves. The visitors of the park can do anything including killing the androids but the one rule is that the androids can’t hurt the humans.
The androids are very close to becoming self-aware because they needed to be very realistic for the park. It is also interesting on how the visitors (the humans) act in this world because it shows their true self. The visitors either act nicely towards the androids or just blatantly cruel.

It is very similar to The Lord of the Flies. The androids start to begin to realize that they are being killed over and over again by these humans and they begin to realize that they are trapped in this world. It is an interesting show that pushes the boundary on artificial intelligence and how we could potentially abuse it in the future.
“Westworld is a great new show that incorporates sci-fi and western themes in a new way,” says Senior Jack Fenker
The third season of Black Mirror, a Netflix original, has come out. In every episode is a different story of how technology can grow too fast and alter our society for the worse. Each story follows a different way are society can be altered by technology. How we can be just entertained with things that have no meaning and be detached from the real world, an example would be from the movie WALL-E. Some stories follow people that are ostracized from society because they did not fit in perfectly with their world.
“Black Mirror shows how technology can influence changes in our society,” says Senior Michael Ordetx.
For all of you tech & sci-fi lovers who have run out Mr. Robot episodes, these two shows are just as good. Find Black Mirror on Netflix and Westworld on HBO Go. Thanksgiving break can’t come fast enough for binging on good TV.
