National Honor Society Welcomes New Members

This wednesday, The Out-of-Door Academy will be inducting new members to The National Honor Society in their annual ceremony.

The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization that is represented mainly in high schools. Selection is based on four criteria: Scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

National Honor Society requirements are strictly enforced. A junior or senior inductee must maintain and 3.75 grade point average. The National Honor Society further defines leaders as students who display the following characteristics:

The student:

  • is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions
  • demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
  • exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals
  • contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school
  • is able to delegate responsibilities
  • exemplifies positive attitudes
  • inspires positive behavior in others
  • demonstrates academic initiative
  • successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; conducts business effectively and efficiently; and demonstrates reliability and dependability
  • is a leader at work and in school or community activities
  • is thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted
  • is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyal school attitude.

During the ceremony, candles are used to highlight the core values of National Honor Society. As each candle is lit, a member of NHS reads the definitions of one of the values. Each member is then given a pin. The current member will place the pin on their shirt to make them an official member of the society. All new inductees of National Honor Society are also required to recite the NHS pledge. Being a member of the National Honor Society is a remarkable achievement and opportunity to represent your school in a positive way.

The Out-of-Door will induct new members into their chapter of National Honor Society on Wednesday, May 13th.
