ODA’s String Orchestra Rocks Out For Charity

Have you ever imagined some of the most famous rock songs in history being transposed into classical pieces? This spring, the ODA string orchestra will be preforming a very unique and different kind of concert, a show featuring songs from one of the most famous bands in rock history, The Rolling Stones.

For many years, ODA’s Tri-M chapter has been involved with Manasota Buds, a local organization that promotes the understanding of Down syndrome. The goal is to provide a place for families with Down syndrome children a supportive environment with people who share the same situation and to raise money for Down syndrome awareness and research.

ODA has gotten involved with many of the Manasota Buds events, such as the annual Buddy Walk and the school talent show, which raises money for the organization. This year, ODA is bringing back an event that was held two years ago, a benefit concert for the Manasota Buds.

In 2012, a combination of the ODA orchestra, chorus, and select members of the band came together for one night to preform a Beatle’s benefit concert for the Manasota Buds. Because of the positive feedback from this concert, ODA has once again decided to give back with the help of music.

When many people picture an orchestra, they immediately think of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, or Bach. However, what many people do not realize is that different types of music can be played on classical instruments, and that people all over the world perform contemporary and even rock music on string instruments.

The ODA string students are excited about preforming such a unique kind of concert and are looking forward to giving back, while at the same time, doing what they love.

“I love performing in benefit concerts. It’s fun to play different genres of music on my violin, and the prospect of giving back makes this event so much more fun” says Caroline Whitten ’14.

The Rolling Stones benefit concert will also include the choir and select band members. Some of the most loved and famous Stones songs, such as “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, “Ruby Tuesday,” “Lady Jane,” and “White Horse” will be featured, as well as many others.

Come out on Thursday, February 20 to support the ODA musicians, as well as the Manasota Buds. Not only will you get to hear a great concert, but you will also be supporting a great cause!
