“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” says famed Boston Celtics basketball coach, Red Auerbach. Everybody needs a way to get away from the drudges of day-to-day life. Auerbach concisely portrays this kind of escapism through his famous quote, acknowledging that music allows us to transcend life’s struggles bringing us to a unique state of mind.

This week for the ODA Bolt, Boyz Noise, consisting of Charlie Githler and I, is beginning a series of posts offering music recommendations intended to wash the dust from your soul, transferring you to this unique state of mind depicted by Auerbach. The list is intended for hip faculty and students alike. Our song recommendations can be played via an online music platform known as gooveshark.com, with just the click of a button.

This link gives you direct access to our Grooveshark webpage. The first series will be composed of designated playlists for specific subjects such as math or English. Thus ideally the songs are to be played while doing homework.

We are posting a mysterious playlist for the launch this week. Click this link for your first dose of our music, compliments of Boyz Noize!

Did you know that the seniors don’t go to school in May? Seniors have to find an internship for May. Most students do not know where they are going to intern. Lauren Berger, CEO of Intern Queen Inc., gives people tips on finding and getting internships at companies. Intern Queen Inc., is a company that helps high school and college students land internships. Here are some tips that she has brought up on her blog.

Create a resume – This will help the company know more about you have and what experience you have. Joe Grano, ODA senior, said “I created a resume to keep track of my jobs and experience just in case I needs it in the future.” He said he put on his resume, “I have worked for Suncoast Youth Sports as a volunteer referee.” He hopes to intern at a sports club.

Create a portfolio – Having a portfolio could be very crucial to landing an internship. This will let the company know what you have done that is related to your job. For example, if you would want to intern at an art studio, you may have to create a portfolio consisting of art work that you have done. Some of you have had a portfolio put together for art schools. Ms. Kozak, an art teacher at Out-of-Door says to “draw from real life and be able to think outside the box.”

Know the company – Keeping in mind of the company’s mission statement, as well as the key words the company uses to describe how important you can be to the company. It will also let the company know that you know the core values of the company you are trying to intern. You can go on to their website and find out about the companies you are applying to.

Take your time – Take your time to review letters and e-mails you send to the company. It is important to take the time and effort to show the company why you would be a good match. Don’t send the same letter to every company

Research – You can also find more tips on landing an internship by visiting the Intern Queen’s blog or by reading her book, All Work, No Pay, will also give you tips on finding and landing the internship you need.

Mr. Woods is the head of internships at Out-of-Door. He helps organize all of the senior internships and offers suggestions about where students can find internships. Don’t be a fool! By April 1st, all of the seniors must have established a connection for their internships.

Sophomore Ashley Monroe had an article published in hard copy in the daily edition and junior, Stephani Spindel had hers published online. The Herald publishes the work of young journalists as part of its “Journalism Next” program, a program dedicated to giving high school writers the experience of having their work read by the Sarasota/Bradenton community and beyond.

This past fall, staff writers Wyatt Page, Amanda Pierce, and Josh Lovin had work published in the Bradenton Herald as well.

The Bolt staff applauds the work of its staff to continue to explore and publish the stories of our school community. Way to go, writers!

Many sports have physical contact with others as an aspect of the game. But it’s the extent of contact in the course of actual play, that lays down acceptable limits.

Football is a violent sport where there is contact in every single play. The nature of football where there is so much physical contact makes for exciting play which attracts many fans.

Hockey is another sport where both contact and skill are required. Within hockey, some players are actually known as enforcers, players who are responsible for making sure the superstars don’t get “cheap-shotted.” These players also help to build up energy when the team is slowing down. These enforcers hold a job that is unwanted by many and chosen by few. Fighting is something that is unique to the sport itself where there is a code of honor among those who are willing to drop the gloves and sacrifice their bodies regularly.

Baseball, is a game of technique and skill where the nature of the sport is not as physical as hockey, but a very skilled, and one set on tradition. Every so often you might see a batter charge the mound after the pitcher because he felt getting hit by the ball was intentional. In fact, there are situations where a pitcher might hit a batter with the ball intentionally. This usually results in the batter charging the mound and both teams clearing the dugouts.

In basketball there is speed and big bodies which makes for contact in some situations, but there is a fine line of what might be considered too much contact. There is contact that just comes along with the play, but if there is any pushing or shoving after the play that is seen as crossing the line. In hockey and football pushing and shoving goes on almost all the time after the whistle of every play, but it is overshadowed by the violent and disruptive hits delivered during play.

The contact that exists within the play of each sport is acceptable through the varied sports. This contact is what happens after the play is over. The contact that is seen as crossing the line is also varied in each sport. In hockey that contact after a whistle can lead to a fight and then play resumes, in football there is always pushing and shoving after a play, in baseball there is always the occasional pitcher who will intentionally hit a batter with the ball, and in basketball any contact after a whistle is seen as crossing the line.

Each sport has its own boundaries for what is considered too much contact.
