A New College Football

Division one college football is the largest college sport in the world. It is multi-million dollar industry where the athletes who create a profit do not receive a penny. The benefits of being a college football player are high with a chance to make it even bigger, the professional league.
Currently, there is no playoff system in college football, which creates a mess to decide which school will play for the national championship. A championship for a division one school means a massive amount of publicity for the school, and also huge financial benefits.
With these new conferences comes a new form of recruiting and scheduling. Recruiting by region is going to be a definite challenge for some of the lower budget small schools that usually recruits from only their regions. Yes, larger schools are going to have an advantage but this new conferencing creates more competition between states and recruiting areas. There is a financial benefit as well for this new conferencing because schools will not have to pay as much for travel expenses. These savings can be used for more recruiting trips as well as scholarships.
The structural part of the new conferencing consists of a total of sixteen teams per conference with eight teams per division. The way each conference was made was through geography and competition. The conference allows every team to be competitive, and have an overall chance at the national championship game.
The overall scheduling will be a new change as well. Scheduling will stay consistent with each conference, so the strength of scheduling between conferences is able to be determined much easier than the current system of scheduling. Each school will be required to play three other schools in their own division, and another three schools in the other division within the conference. The other four games will consist of an opening day game, a rivalry game, and finally two other games where their opponent is out of conference.

I kindly disagree with Joseph Grano’s article because his article does not create inner competition in college football. I think college football conferences should remain the way they are.

Thank you for the great response Jimmy! College Football conferences are definitely a debated topic. Every input is greatly appreciated, and look forward to hearing more.

Think about it now, does high profile in Fargo and GF llaery mean much? You have a total of maybe 200,000 people in those two metro areas, probably over half of whom have no interest in college sports. On the bigger stage, these two conferences and the GWC are all virtually unknown and likely will remain so no matter what happens.
